Description:

Chef Bruce Ucán and Anne Shadle of Mayan Café came to us with a vision of expanding their restaurant business to a semi-permanent food truck. They needed us to help them tell a story of the street-style food originating from Chef Ucán’s native Yucatán Peninsula.

We started by developing a logo that complimented the established Mayan Café brand and began research for the truck design.

Chef Ucán’s tattoo of the Mayan God of Food and Agriculture was used as inspiration for the truck’s central character. We used earthy colors influenced by traditional Mayan pottery and illustrated hieroglyphs from ancient codas for their meaning of celebration and imbibing. Lastly, we extended the design system to the menu, employee uniforms, and truck signage. The result is an energetic, culturally accurate portrayal of the food’s origin, life, and story.

The food truck lives at the Gravely Brewing venue where patrons can enjoy locally brewed beers with their food.

This project won a 2017 AIGA design award.
